Producer's spotlight

Single Origin Puerh Tea

Hi, we are Alvin and Judy!

In 2022, we launched our first single origin Puerh, with a mission to produce terroir-focused, reference level Puerh tea. Since then, we have unearthed fascinating terroir from 5 major Puerh growing regions each year:

  • Yiwu & 6 Ancient Mountains
  • Bulang - Mengsong - Menghai
  • Simao (Pu'Er) - Mojiang
  • Lincang
  • Wen Shan (fast rising new area)

In our explorations, we have also produced White, Black and Green teas with the same focus on terroir and purity.

Production Approach

How We Make Our Tea

Discovering authentic and lesser-known micro regions is our passion, diving a layer deeper beyond the most popular names. To achieve our mission of being "producers of reference", we have been the first to showcase new iconic micro regions and tea from closely-held groves, work we consider pioneering, even by Chinese domestic market standards.

We do not pre-book material with a single fixed farmer each year, given seasonal variations. Producing reference-level terroir tea requires us to maintain consistent relationships with a pool of multiple farmers from each village, hand-selecting material only from groves with the best quality that season. We then ensure the end-to-end control from picking standards, to exact processing parameters.

We avoid blindly chasing the hype of famed estates, “single tree” or Gushu pickings if it is not from relevant tree varietals or does not strongly represent the terroir. The tea we produce must make sense, both from an academic interest and a strong value standpoint.

Sourcing & Processing

End-to-end Management

With team members in Xishuangbanna and Simao (Pu'Er) – we leverage our networks of tested and trusted farmers to secure raw leaf each season and process it in our partner facilities, Brother Sha Da’s "Akaran" processing house in Menghai, and Brother Zhang's base in Xiang Ming.

Thus far we have produced from:

  • 32 micro gardens & groves
  • 3 Imperial Tribute Garden core areas
  • Micro-batch pickings for specific terroir each year (our Bespoke Program)

House Style

Terroir & Purity

Our house style strongly emphasizes complexity and purity. Certain flavor notes are interference and warning signals, such as sulfurous tastes from chemical fertilizer, harshness, or astringency from leaf picked during rainy weather.

We strictly avoid these, instead prioritizing the accurate representation of terroir profiles recognized in the single-origin Puerh circles.

Why?
When we try to see past all the noise and myths around Puerh and many other tea types, adopting a terroir-focused reference-level approach is the best way to help us navigate our understanding of ecology and quality confidently.
