The delicate Biluochun tea is rightfully prized as one of the finest among all the Chinese green teas. Good Biluochun has a rare balance between the utmost delicacy of aroma and mouthfeel, yet with a surprisingly rich, long-lasting umami. Not unlike a fine sheng puerh, which might explain our love for this green tea.
When tea lovers encounter a good Biluochun, it is like a window thrown open into Spring.
We have sourced some excellent Biluochun from the core region of Suzhou, on the Dong Shan mountain of Wuzhong district. This specific terroir is comprised of an acidic soil and tea trees intercropped alongside fruit trees (loquat and red bayberries), which results in this tea having powerful fruit and floral aromas. The tea trees themselves are heirloom, small-leaf domestic Zhejiang varietals. Leaves from these heirloom varietal trees tend to be less uniform in appearance (shape and color) but have a unique richness of flavor.
We have selected two grades of Biluochun to offer.
Grades and Flavor Profile
- Our Superior Grade Biluochun is from the earliest pickings and picked to an extremely high precision following the "one bud one leaf" standard. This grade of leaf is very fine, small and completely covered in fuzz. The tea has an ethereal floral-fruity fragrance of jasmine, fig leaf, green pears and fresh winter melon. The soup is thickly textured on the tongue and rich with trichomes (tea hairs) turning it misty.
- Our First Grade Biluochun is also a high-quality picking, approximately 7-10 days later than the Superior Grade. This results in a bud and leaf that are very slightly longer, sometimes with a secondary leaf beginning to unfurl alongside. There is a more distinct aroma of chestnuts and toasted fresh cut grass cuttings, together with a deeper fruit flavor of ripe apple. The soup should also be thick with trichomes (tea hairs) and have a smooth, viscous texture.
Geographical Information:

True Biluochun is grown on two mountains in the massive Taihu Lake, neighboring the city of Suzhou. Xi Shan (West Mountain) is also the largest island in the lake, while Dong Shan (East Mountain) is on the peninsula attached to the mainland. There are six villages/gardens here which boast heirloom (quntizhong) small-leaf varietals growing among fruit trees.
