2014 Dong Guo Raw Puerh
Private pressing from a Taiwanese producer, Shanghai stored.
Mixed spring picking of medium and older trees from the Dong Guo area in Lincang.
An elegant, easy-drinking Mengku tea with characteristic bright fragrance and penetrating stonefruit sweetness coupled with just enough herbal complexity, we enjoy this regularly for its excellent value and bright, wakeful qi.
TERROIR
Dong Guo is a major tea growing area in Western Mengku (Lincang region), lying close to Xiao Hu Sai but with its own character. Recent years have seen the small village of Mo Lie in this area gain fame (and high prices). Interestingly, this pressing includes material from the nearby Mo Lie village blended in -- this was before Mo Lie prices went ballistic, so Mr Liao combined his smaller Mo Lie picking into the broader Dong Guo blend.
TASTE PROFILE
A juicy, uplifting Lincang profile of sugarcane, peaches and moderate, pleasant astringency. As compared to the more expensive Mo Lie tea, this is slightly less intense, more rounded with a focus on stone-fruit sweetness and lower bitterness/pungency.
After 8 years of Shanghai aging, it is starting to develop complexity with the slightest hint of root herbs and aniseed funk (if brewed strong), characteristic of many single origin Lincang teas.
