FatBat Private Pressing Gushu Raw Puerh

蛮砖·曼林古树

A signature Man Zhuan tea, with prominent forest honey fragrance and the deeper/darker taste profile that we seek from this mountain.

This selection is from Man Lin, a village on Man Zhuan mountain (alongside other famous villages like Peach Village and Wa Long). Ecological conditions here have been kept in excellent shape, with lovely old arbor gushu trees growing interspersed with other native plants. The gardens have not been overpicked and agrochemical use is forbidden.

Given the super low yields in early April this year, farmer Zhang only managed to produce a small amount of pure gushu tea for us, which we pressed into these cakes. Farmer Zhang processed this material beautifully, by himself and his wife personally.

 TASTING NOTES

Retasted April 2026: This tea has aged stupendously well. All trace of youthful caprice has mellowed into a the rich dark plum sweetness of classically aged Yiwu-region teas. Testament to the pure gushu nature, there is no rough tannin or astringency, but rather a powerful core of honey and macerated stonefruit. Highest recommendation for tasting now and aging forward.

[Initial tasting notes: Very interesting tea that yields complex, evolving sessions. First brews are thick with wild honey sweetness surrounding a core of damp mossy wood. A slightly firmer hand will coax out new dimensions of yellow stone fruit sugars and deep forest character reminiscent of lichen, rocky streams and forest floor. The tea soup is smooth, rich with pectin. ]

TERROIR

Man Lin village sits in Man Zhuan mountain (one of the 6 ancient tea mountains) – you may have heard of other villages on the mountain like Wa Long and Peach Village. Man Lin village gardens border on the neighboring mountain Yibang and has a mix of medium and small leaf varietals growing together; small amounts of "cat-ear" style small-leaf tea is also sometimes picked here. This gives the tea a distinctive taste profile that is delicately creamy, honeyed and with a strong wild character.
