One of our main objectives as producers is to continually uncover new and exceedingly obscure terroir, which in the eyes of tea connoisseurs, is deemed worth tasting. It helps the community to identify the new frontiers in the Puerh world.
Our efforts to make connections on the ground in Mojiang region seems fruitful this year. Through a hefty amount of persistence, we have managed to obtain a small amount of this rare tea to offer this year.
It is a top-tier Simao region tea which potentially competes with the big guns like Phoenix Nest or Kunlu Shan. Like the aforementioned names, the trees here are of the small-leaf variety, producing tea that is highly refined and delicate, with great complexity.
The soup is fabulously clear and pale, characteristic of the best remote forest-type groves. Sweetness of candied winter melon and yellow flowers is expressed in the most delicate way, yet within a rich and luxuriously textured soup. The fragrance is exotic flowers, sunlit lichens and fresh white mushrooms.
TERROIR
The ancient tea gardens of Bodhi Grove (Pu Ti Qing 菩提箐) are managed by 17 families from Lao Long Zhai (老龙寨) which means “Old Dragon Village”. Located on the distant slopes of Buddha Lotus Mountain (Fo Lian Shan 佛连山) in Simao, these groves are considered “Zen Tea Gardens” (禅茶园), for obvious reasons.
Total annual production of the village does not exceed 350kg. We have not seen tea from Bodhi Grove traded publicly before – we have seen it being offered within small circles as a spiritual “Zen Tea” (禅茶), which we understand after drinking it and enjoying its meditative nature. This tea is indeed superlative in quality, worthy of highest appreciation.
